Varsity don wants FG to empower theatre practitioners

A professor of Drama and Theater in the Faculty of Arts, University of Abuja, Barth Oshionebo, has made a passionate appeal to the government to create endowment funds for the promotion of theater arts in the country.

He made this known in a chat with journalists at the university’s main campus Gwagwalada when he presented the 27th inaugural lecture entitled: “Drama and Theater in Education and Educational of Theater of the Future”.

Oshionebo tasked governments at all levels to provide incentives to the Department of Theater Arts, noting that it would in no small measure assist the country in the area of projecting its good image to the rest of the world.

He equally implored the government to give priority attention to the Nollywood industry with a view to promoting culture and core values such as honesty, uprightness, and decency in society, just as he called wealthy individuals and government to invest heavily on performances and productions.

The university don suggested that government should promote community theater for the purposes of reaching the grassroots, stressing that such innovation would create awareness in the area of propagating government policies.

The chairman of the occasion and the Vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Michael Adikwu, reiterated the commitment of his leadership towards promoting research and development.
