AMMC clears roadside traders, illegal park at Area 1

By Austine ELEMUE   In continuation of its cleaning exercise, the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, AMMC, had last week cleared illegal structures in Area 1, Garki, Abuja.

In particular, AMMC officials stormed and cleared illegal structures and sites used for roadside trading and transportation activities around the popular Area 1 bridge and Old Federal Secretariat.

The exercise was carried out through the Department of Development Control, Abuja Environmental Protection Board, AEPB, and other sister agencies including security operatives.

Speaking during the exercise, Director of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, said that the area has been known for a den of hoodlums and street hawkers for nefarious activities, such as drugs peddling, roadside trading, thereby causing traffic congestion and crimes.

He said prior to the removal, the affected people were given two weeks notice, to enable them vacate the place.

According to him, after sanitizing the area, government intends to develop temporary car park, transit terminal and food court, as a quick win measure to prevent the reoccurrence of the nuisance there.   He, therefore, advised affected persons to find lawful places for their business activities, instead of constituting nuisance.

Also speaking, AEPB Director, Baba Lawal, noted that the Old Federal Secretariat lacks parking space, hence the decision to clean up the outside, and make a car park for its workers and visitors

Meanwhile, reacting to the development, AMAC councilor representing City Centre, Hon. Dogara Bassa, decried the removal exercise, noting that most affected people were Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, doing business in the area to survive.

He appealed to the government to as a matter of urgency provide alternative place for the people to continue their trading activities.
