Uduaghan, Manager’s senatorial ambitions light up Delta South
The Peoples Democratic Party, Delta South, Delta state, is currently inundated with a herculean task ahead of the party’s primaries for elective positions.
Known as a senatorial district blessed with ebullient, tested and world class politicians who have contributed immensely to the political evolution, development and growth the country, the senatorial district is once again politically active.
A major test at hand is the emergence of persons who are jostling for various political elective positions under the platform of party.
Presently, two major political bigwigs from Delta South Senatorial District though from different tribes have signified interest to contest for one position: the senate.
Political pundits have seen this as a battle that is going to be very interesting taken into consideration the personalities involved.
Senator James Manager from Bomadi, and the current senator at the Red Chambers representing Delta South Senatorial District, having been voted for since, 2003 to date, wants to re-contest in 2019.
On the hand is Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan from Abigborodo, Warri North Local Government Area, a former Commissioner of Health, Delta State, later on Secretary to State Government and from 2007 to 2015 governor is equally interested in being a senator.
At a mega rally held at Oleh, township stadium Isoko South Local Government council on 8th June 2018 to drum support for the reelection of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Senator Manager told the mammoth PDP faithful that he is contesting again.
At the same venue, Uduaghan’s posters flooded everywhere with the “inscription Dr. Emmanuel Ewetan Uduaghan for 2019 Senate”, and he was equally present physically at the township stadium.
Various supporters of the two political heavy weights have been canvassing reasons while their “principal” must be voted for. Those on the side of Dr. Uduaghan claim that the Delta South Senatorial District which has Ijaws, Itsekiris and Isokos, only the Itsekiri have not produced a senator. So for equity, fairness and harmony, Uduaghan should be given the slot.
They gave reasons that in 1999 Senator Stalla Omu from Isoko was voted elected and she stayed in the position to 2013. They further pointed out that since 2003 to date, Senator Manager from Bomadi, an Ijaw, has been the senator, therefore, the Itsekiris should be considered in 2019.
On the contention by those saying that the Itsekiris have not occupied the position, of a senator representing the senatorial district, an Ijaw group drumming support for Senator Manager upbraided and overruled them, saying at a time in the past, one Justice Atake an Itsekiri was a senator and that from 1999 to date the position of House of Representatives for Warri Federal Constituency has been occupied by Itsekiris.
Presently, political watchers are x-raying the strength of the two political heavy weights, saying that for the former governor, Uduaghan, his strength will lie in his place, Warri North, Warri South, Warri South west, which is predominantly populated by Itsekiris and Ijaws, and the two Isoko local government councils where he is said to have been a benefactor to so many in the past by way of employment, appointments into key positions and other empowerment, and that this will be the time to say a big thank you to him.
Senator Manager’s stronghold in the Ijaw speaking areas local government councils comprising, Bomadi, Patani, Burutu, Warri South, West, and other areas in the senatorial district.
Uduaghan’s aspiration is even seen by many to be receiving strong opposition from his home soil, Warri North, as a politician, an Itsekiri under the same party has equally signified his interest to run in 2019.
At the inauguration of Delta Ijaw Political Assembly, DIPA, at the residence of the deputy governor, Kingsley Burutu Otuaro in Asaba, the DIPA promised to return Dr. Okowa, and other Ijaw candidates who believe in the cause of DIPA and Senator Manager.
Chief Vero Tangbowei, PDP Delta South Women Leader endorsed Manager for 2019 senatorial elections, saying that the Maritime University at Okerenkoko, Gbaramatu in Warri South West Local Government council had the imprimatur of the senator.
According to her, the more experience a legislator gains, the better for the electorate and such a person will gain more influence, connections and ideas on how to move the society forward.
For now, it is a battle of titans.
