Over 12 killed as gunmen raid banks in Igarra

The Igarra, headquarters of Akoko Local Government Council, last Thursday was thrown into mourning and pandemonium as daredevil criminals struck the community by surprise at about 4:30pm killing a policeman and scores residents.

Reports said 12 people were killed.

Trouble started when the armed robbers attempted to attack the only two banks in the community; Unity Bank and Keystone Bank.

It was also reported that the community police station was also torched while detainees in the cells were not spared from the attack.

After the attack on the police station, the robbers on their way to the banks, shot three people dead at the parliament, a popular relaxation joint opposite the police station.
At the two banks at Utua quarters, over 10 persons were reportedly killed.

However, security personnel at one of the banks fell two of the robbers down.
An indigene of the community, Ofei Obende, said in an attempt to resist the criminals, youths in the community mobilized but were overpowered by the firepower of the armed robbers which led to a number of deaths.

It will be recalled that a similar attack took place in 2016 where over 6 people were killed.
