LRCN commences induction of librarians at graduation

Qualified Librarians would henceforth be inducted into the Librarian Registration Council of Nigeria, LRCN, at their point of graduation from tertiary institutions.

Registrar of LRCN Prof Michael Afolabi, who announced this during the Mandatory workshop on Electronic Resource Management Systems in libraries at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, said the induction at point of graduation will start from the 2018/2019 academic session.

Afolabi noted that the induction at points of graduation was part of efforts to increase the number of certified librarians in the country.

A statement by the Assistant Director, Information at LRCN, Mrs Ngozi Oboh, said Also, LRCN has written to all employers of labour to recruit and promote only certified librarians, adding that LRCN establishment Act 12 of 1995 empowers it to determine who would be called a librarian as well as the level of knowledge and skills required to become a librarian in Nigeria.

The LRCN CEO said certification of librarians was the core mandate of the Council, stating that already, the Council, which is a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education has registered 5,437 librarians.

“LRCN has secured an approval to commence Induction at Points of Graduation. This will start from 2018/2019 academic session. We are determined to ensure that more graduates are certified in order to emerge as globally competitive professionals. We are pushing this move further to ensure that quacks are flushed out of the system,” he said.

Afolabi called on all holders of degrees in library and information science to register with LRCN and become certified librarians.

He said LRCN has reviewed the curriculum for library and information science to be used in all library schools across the country, adding that the new curriculum and benchmarks provides information of facilities, staffing, nomenclature of LIS degrees, faculty of domicile and course content.
