El-Rufa’I, Shehu Sani, others fight over primaries

The crisis in the Kaduna state chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is far from over as Senator Shehu Sani and a senatorial aspirant, General Sani Saleh (rted) have both rejected the adoption of indirect primaries by Governor Nasir el-Rufa’I.

The duo at a joint press conference at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna on Thursday, said the party has just concluded the state executive committee meeting at which they read out a resolution that they prefer the indirect method in the forthcoming primary elections.

Senator Shehu Sani remarked that both of them are aspiring for the same position, saying, “if those of them aspiring for a position said this is the kind of primaries we want to be conducted so why should any person decides for us?

“There are three issues here reached; first, there is litigations as regards to legitimacy of the existing executives and delegates in the state.

“Secondly, we were excluded from participating in the congresses.

“Thirdly, indirect primary is simply about fear of the people. You don’t want to subject yourself to the people, and fourthly, is the very fact that APC cannot change the political landscape of Nigeria by adopting a system of cash and carry.

“You pay to be elected, that must be fought if we want to instill discipline order in our democratic system, we must make it possible for men of honour, principles and ideas to come into office through a credible and transparent process.

‘The position taken by the party today is a request to the national secretariat of the party. We have also made our position very clear so it is left for the national secretariat to take a position.

“Myself, Senator Sani Saleh and other aspirants are all on the same page. We are for direct primary,” he stressed.
