FCTA official unveils book on African woman

An Assistant Director in the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Mrs. Uzor Udegbunam- Chioma, has authored a book titled "The African Woman and the Quest for Equality', aimed at inspiring change of attitude towards women.

At the unveiling of the book in Abuja, the Director, FCT Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Adamu Noma, described the book as a compendium that would bring the African woman out.

According to him, the book also recognizes women and girl child as an integral part of the society, saying that when you develop a woman you have developed a nation automatically.

"When you develop a woman you have developed a nation because they are so compassionate. Most of them are highly responsible that they can take care of our assets, they take care of children, take care of our homes. So we need to encourage them appreciate them, recognize them in our societies," he stressed.

On her part, the book reviewer, Prof. Elizabeth Nyager commended the author for attempting to bridge the gap that works against women's right, societal wellbeing and development.

She described the book as a basic documentation of all protocols on legal documents used globally to tackle the issue of gender inequality.   She however charged the author to improve in her subsequent works, saying, "the book is very cosmopolitan in outlook and cannot be easily connected to by the grassroots African woman as they are not directly engaged."

Speaking earlier, the author noted that it was not easy putting the work together, adding that the whole idea came up in New York, where over 2000 women came together in 2013 to talk about gender equality and other related issues on how to achieve the goal of equality in the societies.

She however, posited that the idea was not to contest for a 50/50 but at least a 49.9 percent.
